Enoch Seminar – Sept 15, 2025 | Session Theme: Matthew, James, and 1 Peter Within Judaism

Day 1 Takeaway

Day One of the seminar made one theme abundantly clear: the New Testament cannot be understood apart from the Jewish world in which it was written. Whether Matthew, James, or 1 Peter, each text reflects a Jewish voice addressing Jewish questions — even as they grapple with Gentile inclusion.

  • For Christians, reading these texts within Judaism challenges supersessionist assumptions and honors the diversity of Jewish thought in the Second Temple period. It also reminds us that the earliest Jesus-followers remained firmly rooted in their Jewish context, and that understanding this context is essential for Jewish-Christian relations today.
