Enoch Seminar – Sept 15, 2025 | Session Theme: Matthew, James, and 1 Peter Within Judaism
Day 1 Takeaway
Day One of the seminar made one theme abundantly clear: the New Testament cannot be understood apart from the Jewish world in which it was written. Whether Matthew, James, or 1 Peter, each text reflects a Jewish voice addressing Jewish questions — even as they grapple with Gentile inclusion.
For Christians, reading these texts within Judaism challenges supersessionist assumptions and honors the diversity of Jewish thought in the Second Temple period. It also reminds us that the earliest Jesus-followers remained firmly rooted in their Jewish context, and that understanding this context is essential for Jewish-Christian relations today.
